Morgridge Institute for Research

Ownership

The Morgridge Institute is a private, nonprofit biomedical research institute affiliated with the University of Wisconsin–Madison. It was made possible with a $50 million gift from Tashia and John Morgridge, who are Madison residents, and while it is not a traditional independent business, it is independent from large corporations and controlled by a nonprofit board.

Local Sourcing

The institute's interdisciplinary science is funded by the National Institutes of Health, U.S. Department of Energy, U.S. Department of Homeland Security and other public and private sources. Research is conducted through university and federal funding channels rather than local procurement.

Community Involvement

The Morgridge Institute is the longtime host of Summer Science Camp for high-school students from across the state and co-produces the annual Wisconsin Science Festival every fall. In 2024, Morgridge formalized its research focus in scientific communication and hosts education and outreach programs.

Local Workforce

All Morgridge Institute postdocs are full employees and receive comprehensive benefits including health insurance, 401k matching contributions, and generous paid time off policies. The institute has recruited some of the best scientific minds who absolutely love working at Morgridge.

Revenue Retention

Over the last 100 years, WARF has invested $4.6 billion in annual research grants to UW-Madison and the Morgridge Institute. While funding flows through the institute for research purposes, it remains a nonprofit with significant external grant dependence rather than local revenue generation.

Local Presence

Heavy corporate/institutional boilerplate with templated event space language, multiple venue selector links (Pyle Center, Fluno Center, Wisconsin Union Venues), and generic facility descriptions. Madison/UW affiliation provides minimal local character; copy reads as standardized venue marketing rather than personality-driven.
